I was stationed at nelson Kaserne with the 193rd MP Co-3rd Plt from 84-86, back then I beleive it was the 1/81st FA,2/4Inf, a maintenance support unit, and the big red one was in the area. Although I am not in the military now, it made me think back and how I had a blast, and I loved going down to Garmisch to ski. Bill Morris

CommentsI came across this site and it brought back so many fond memories for me (well, those I can remember after having one Geisenhalbe too many). I lived in Neu-Ulm (first Voehringen then Ludwigsfeld by the Lake)as a civilian from 1979-1990. Wiley and Nelson barracks were my home away from home and I made so many friends there..to name a few...Brian Liston, Clyde Booth, Paul Rangel, Alec Smith, Steve Toth, David Hawk and more too many to mention. I loved the pics of the surrounding area and if you have more where they came from, I would love to know if you could post those as well. Anyway, cool site and I will visit it often. Take care...Karin Murphy (formerly Wuest)...P.S.I have pics posted of myself on militaryconnections.com under the 2/4 Infantry and Wiley sites. Maybe someone will recognize me and send me an email (murphysgrl65@msn.com)

CommentsName: Carl D. Oyler Email: carl@indy.rr.com Phone: 800-953-6224 I was a clerk in Svc Btry, 1st Battalion, 81st Artillery, (Pershing Missile Unit)for Capt Orr & CWO Stillman. Our unit of approx 650 shipped to Robert E. Lee Barracks, Mainz, Germany, from Ft Sill Ok, in July of 64. I was at REL Barracks for one yr. Jerry Boruff, Bill Keene, & I got together last Sept (2001) & had drinking reunion. Would love to hear from others. It seems there are no 1st/81st reunions. Presently I am an investigator for a law firm in Marion, IN. I have done some searching for 1st/81st & have had very little success. One of the atty's in our firm handles strictly VA cases. I stumbled across this site looking for some material to assist one of our veterans. He, John Riser, claims to have witnessed a helicopter crash at Wiley Barracks, Neu Ulm, Germany, as his entire battalion stood in muster formation. He was with Battery D, 1st/81st. He was there in May, June, & July, 1970. He thinks it was on a Monday in June, but not sure of exact date. If there is anyone reading this that witnessed that same helicopter crash I would certainly appreciate a contact. Riser only recalls a cple of names in his unit there, LTC Jack Goldstein & SGT E5 James Stein. I noticed the 1st entry in this material is from someone who was stationed at Neu Ulm from March, 70/March, 73. Perhaps he could help, he gave no name, phone, or email. Thanks for any help!!!!!!

CommentsI was assigned to Bravo Battery 2/33 FA, Wiley Barracks from Mar 75 through Mar 78. Battery Commander was Robin Elder and 1SG Alfred G. Edwards, served with several other CO's and 1SG's including 1SG Lixey. Many great memories, learned lessons that lasted forever. Started there as a PV2 and left as a SGT (2nd Howitzer section chief). Harv Falkenstine listurcar@qwest.net
CommentsI was stationed at Wiley Barracks Dec. 1953-April 55 I was in Hq & Hq Company with the I&R platoon. I also spent some time in K Company across the quadrangle. I was sorry to see that tore the place down. I have lots of fond memories of that place. About the only thing that spoiled it was having to go to Hohenfels and Grafenwoehr every now and then. Living in a pup tent at 18 below zero aint no fun at all. Curtis Wakley cwak@mlode.com
Comments12/18/2002 I was stationed in Schwaebisch Gmuend 1984-1986. A. Co. 55th Maint. Bt. I lived in Hardt Karserne, the first builing on the right when you entered the gate. Had GREAT times there! Remember riding to Stugart for finance, and going to Ulm/New Ulm for a night out. Also remember the base Enlisted Men's Club and Hong Kong Charlie and his "sharkshin" suits. I remember the chopper crash also, "A" battery barracks was almost hit, I remember taking photos, but don't remember the fatality. Also remember the cold nights on manuever at Strauss Field. Was 15E30, which I think was el operator. Never did make E-5. If anyone is out there that remembers me please write. email is danduncan@inet99.net

CommentsThom Boze, Don't remember you either, but like you said, "brother", we walked the same ground. I can't remember what the field site was called, was it Redlington? or something like that, or Interling? HELP, my brain cells are gone. I do know that going to the field for 30 days was better than staying on base. I remember the first night I pulled guard duty in the motor pool. Nice weapon but no ammo. I also remember "making bo-coo" money pulling others KP and guard duty because they wanted to go out the first of the month. If you could hold onto your money until about the 25th of the month you could sell your KP and guard duty shifts for a pack of smokes. Loaned money once but never got it back so I decided the best thing to do was barter in goods than cash. There was this huge black dude named Ovaltine (I think) that was our platoon sgt. Great guy. There was also a cook named Bob (Patton I think was his last name) that I teamed up with for a USO show. Some officer heard us playing one Sunday at the service club and booked us for a rock and soul show to several surrounding camps. Was a lot of fun. Take care and I'll check back in a couple of days. Dan 90/103

CommentsHi This brings back good memories. I was in 1/81 FA from 84 to 87. Lots of good memories.
CommentsI was with the 579th Ord at Wartburg in Phorzhiem when the Company moved to Nelson Barracks in Neu Elm Feb 68 to Nov 68. There was just a handful of us left behind I was the SOG and we had one officer with us but I never saw him .Sgt Uwe Korting and Sgt Meyers were our platoon leaders . When they left for Neu Elm I think that I was in charge of the kaserne other than the invisable LT. We really missed our friends that moved but had one hell of a good time with the guys left behind .I can't remember what my job was I think that was just a good place for some clerk in DC to send me after Nam .Great site Dave Keough . dkeo@mit.edu

CommentsWhat a story about wizzing in the potatoes while on KP at Inneringen, but it wasn't me. (At least I don't remember) One thing I do remember from Inneringen, was taking part in painting a duece and a half with glossy OD, what a shine it gave off. We did get in some trouble for that. Also remember "stopping" up the drains on the huge sink basin with face cloths and filling it with water to take a bath. I have some old photos I can share from Ulm. Anyone interested just contact me at danduncan@inet99.net.
CommentsHey, awesome memories... I was in HHB 2/5 2nd Platoon!! From Aug. 85 - Aug. 87. Went with you from Ft Riley to Wiley. This site better stay up FOREVER!! Great to look at and remember all the friends (and enemies :-) Take care. SP-4 Robert Minter (RMinter9412@cs.com)
CommentsHeadquarters, 4/41st FA at Hardt Kaserne, Swabisch Gmund, from 67 to 69. CW3 Richard Proctor was Personnel Officer, and I handled officer/senior NCO records as a (finally) SP5 in the Batallion Personnel Office. Pershing Missiles were the name of the game, but we never once saw the field. During exercises, we did guard duty at Hardt. Proctor was a great Warrant Officer. Dr. Jim Hedstrom, Nashville
CommentsHey Duncan--remember Darby from Two Egg Florida? He plugged that huge sink in my barracks the first time I was at Inneringen. We didn't have showers in our building and had to walk across to the next building. I think you were the guy who showed me how to attach charges to the missile the first day I was assigned to the unit. Eventually became battery clerk and probably did your paperwork to send you home. How about Doppmann? And Sidney (?) from Massachusetts? Smallwod from W. VA? Ray Ruge from Illinois? Paul Anderson-KY. Can't remember your Plt Sgt but there was a Sgt Thomas in charge of one and Lytle had 2nd Plt. Galyean had HQ. Salvant had Mess Hall, Harris was supply sgt. Bunch was the XO, Bird the CO, and Durden the 1SG. Medina had missile maint--the 21 G's I think they were. Lt's were Crawford, Cholis, Pilsbury and a Warrant named Vance. Brewer, Cain, Witsman (?) were clerks. At Inneringen March 71 we had an E-6 who got court martialed for beating up Flynn, but can't remember his name. Razar was there too. Marco Spear. Copeland, Jacobsen, La Salle--too many guys and too long ago. Check out the photos for 1/81, maybe it will jog your memory.

CommentsGreat site. I was in 2-5 FA from 83-91, both at Riley and then in Neu Ulm. I went from 2LT to command of Alpha, took it to DS/DS and then inactivated in March 1991. John Kolessar and I re-visited Neu Ulm a couple of years ago and it is much changed...although Capo and Lotti are still in Neu Ulm and have a couple of bars, including the original "Capos". 2-5 FA is again in the active force, just stationed at Fort Sill. I am the current Battalion Commander of 2-5 FA, even had another old 2-5'er as my CSM initially, CSM(R) Randall Woods...I've seen COL(R) Elder several times over the last few years, along with other old 2-5'ers, BG Rhett Hernandez, LTC Vince Price (commands a battalion down the street), LTC Pat Antoneitti, MAJ John Kolessar, and a host of others.

CommentsGreat site!. Lot's of memory. SPC4 Lau from the 74th Pershing at Lagerlechfield 1971-72. Flown glider there with my German buddies at the air field. Anyone remember a freezing winter drill where guys were getting ready for the sac and I had to go on guard duty. Notice sarge had a c-ration can of deisel fuel laying on the pit fire and when it got hot, shot up flames over a foot high. Me and my great idea, got a gallon ration container from my German driver and did the same. Well, out in the field, the German guards were talking about a forest fire that lite the night sky in the direction of our camp. Anyway, when I got back it was nice and warm. Charles, Dixon... I hope life have been warm and kind to all of you for now and forever. Would like to exchange old photo if you have any. Email me at COMPUDOC_STAN@HOTMAIL.COM.

CommentsGreat site. It brought back a lot of memories. My MOS was 15E10- Pershing Missile Crewman. I was with C Btry 1/81 FA for a short time from 1974 to 1975 and was transferred out because I was unable to obtain a surety clearance. My Battery Commander was Major Kedra. I never did get to be a crewman but was assigned the responsibility of driving and maintaining a deuce and a half. Does anyone remember the "dirty 30" ? Our battery participated in a warhead change at Inneringen where I got to lie in the snow for most of the day outside of the Inneringen site humping an M-60, spare barrel, 2 cans of 7.62, my M-16, ammo for that and my TA-50. The little bar at the Inneringen site was great. Really enjoyed that Sonnenbrau. After drinking a bunch of it, I tattooed myself with a pin, thread and india ink. I remember tossing a frisbee in the snow with SSGT. Roten. In 1975, a bunch of us went to the Bodensee for the 4th. of July, rented some small electric powered boats and shot fireworks off out on the lake. Some of the guys I remember were Randall (Space Cowboy), Bitchin Bob Besner, Golson(who crashed his deuce and a half), Laird, Bill Hulse, Olson ( who got a brand new 5 ton truck built in 1958) for the warhead change at Inneringen. I got transferred to the 9th. Engineer Batallion in Aschaffenberg in '75-'76 and ETS'd there. If anyone remembers me, John Kohler, contact me at kohler@nwlink.com. I had some photos but they got lost somewhere along the way.
CommentsBoy this is like old home week. I joined the 5th Platoon of the 579th on Thanksgiving Day, 1966 while it was at Kaiserslautern, move with it to Pforzheim, and moved with it to Neu Ulm. I left there in August 1970 and went back to Redstone, then to Whitesands Missile Range, took a side trip to Green River Utah. Made Warrant Officer at Whitesands, then went to 3rd Platoon C Battry 1/81 FA in Neu Ulm. I have lots of good memories from Pforzheim, Neu Ulm, and last but not least The Inneringen CAS site. Dave Nies <godparent@earthlink.net>
CommentsI was with A/1/81 March 71-April 72 and spent 3 tours out at Inneringen--first one--(March 71-May?)was a double shift to cover for a battery back in the states to fire. We had a 4 beer per night limit at the bar on site and one night a week they were closed (Monday?), but if you went down to the boiler room the little German civilian who ran it would sell you 5 bottles of Sonnenbrau (with the flip tops) for a dollar. You had to bring back the empties to him. I pulled backup alert force on the site about my second tour--September 71--but they never issued us live ammo. The only live rounds I ever had were when we went to a rifle range in the summer to qualify--gave us about 30 rounds and then doubled whatever score we had to meet their standards. Must have been short on ammo. SSG Roten was there with us in 71-72--think he was a fairly young guy, married, had been with Air Defense units before Pershing. Does anyone know if the Inneringen site is still there, and what they are using it for, or did they bulldoze it like they did Wiley Kaserne? Gene Smania

CommentsI am really happy to see that some benefit came from the COHORT yearbook. Thanks for putting together a great site. I have a special place in my heart for Wiley Bks and Neu Ulm as I spent some time there with 2/33 FA '73-'76 and again as the commander of 2/5 FA in the yearbook pictures. My best to whoever created the site. robinlelder@earthlink.net
CommentsThis is absolutely amazing. While the yearbook turned out be a great idea, but financially unsound, it seems to be finally filling some kind of purpose. I am sure that Robin Elder still has a few hundred in his attic for sale. Many thanks for whomever put up this site, and posted memories. I have very fond memories of Neu Ulm, particularly, Delmonsingen and the regimental bier. I was the battalion XO, 86-87, and in the yearbook pictures. Harry Emerson (hemerson@direcway.com)
CommentsI was stationed in Neu Ulm from '86 to late '88 with the 193rd M.P. Co. Customs. We lived in the USMCA building on Wiley. Any of you who went back to the U.S. had to clear us first. Anyone remember a Spec-4 Deering? Didn't think so. I am looking for an E-8 from 2/4 ( I think it was ), named Kurt Glover- Etrichs. He was a friend of mine and we lost contact some years back. I can be reached at: wildamericanmonkey@hotmail.com Thanks for putting up this site, and to the entire 3rd platoon of the 194th M.P. Co.

CommentsGreeting's! We may have not served together, but we sure as hell chew'ed the same ground together. For that we must all be proud. Hello to all my Brother's who kicked ass in W.Germany to defeat the East. In Particular the unit's in 56FA Brigade/Command(Pershing) and all support unit's. Plus are brother's in Lance-Nike-Redstone, and other's, who came to defend, before us,and after. Cheerio. 15E/20
CommentsI'm Greg Lucht and served with Svc Btry, HHB 1/81 FA and the Wiley Fire Dept from Feb 70 to Jul 72. Worked for CPT Smith (SVC Btry) who was a great commander (and a little wild)and CPT Reaves (HHB). I keep seeing Thom Boze's name coming up, but I didn't see his Post. Hi Thom!! The last time I saw you was at the Holzkiste that I managed in 73. A lot went down back then: Helicopter crash, B Btry fire, 5 trucks fire bombed, race riots, Baader-Mienhof, Fast Eddie, Pershing's first trip to Graf ( was on SV-103 the Ord Plt wrecker). I was on guard duty at the Main Gate when the Sikorsky went up, popped wqhite smoke and came right down. Inially no one was hurt, but the crew chief (with about 27 days left in the Army) tried to abandon the copter. He didn't know that it was tilted to the right. We yelled for him to stay put but he probably didn't hear us. He ran forward and the first blade stuck him and knocked him down. He was crawling away and the second blade nailed him and took his head off. There was a formation right where the copet went down, but they all scattered when they knew what was going on. I'd love to hear from any of you that know me (unless I owe you money, ha ha). This site has great pictures. Email me at luchtg@traderlucht.com
CommentsMy name is Jay Barnes and I was stationed at Nelson, B Co. 2/4 Inf. from 12/85 - 1/88. I see Bill Bowen has signed this guest book as well and I wonder if he remembers me. Good guy's there - Pappy, Duncan, McKelvey. I think Bill and Pappy may have shared a room. Would enjoy hearing from anyone there at that time. 1st Sgt. was DJ "45 and 45 by high noon" Johnson. I can be reached at jay.barnes@nmcco.com or jaybird66@pressenter.com
CommentsMy father, ssgt. John W Crownover, was stationed a Nelson from 69-73, from there we went to Ft. Lewis, Washington. He ran the rod & gun club most of the time that he was at nelson. Just wanting to see if anyone remembers him. Thanks Jim Crownover. jkc43fan@aol.com
CommentsI guess I'm an old timer when it comes to Wiley. My name is Don Palumbo.I was the battallion Mail clerk with Hq&Hq 2d Armored Rifle Battallion 41st Inf. 4th Armored Division 1959-1961. Some of the best moments in my life were spent in Ulm/Neu Ulm. Its amazing to see those pictures. Most of the buildings were still pretty well shot up since ww2 when I got there, though they were all patched you could see the straifing that happened. During the Berlin wall crisis I was with the 4th Inf at Ft Lewis,Washington, got extended by Pres.Kennedy and flew back to Germany on Operation "Long Thrust" We picked up our equipment at Bremerhaven and would you believe that on our way to Wildflecken we stayed over one night at Wiley. Now the best---The 41st moved over to Nelson and left Wiley open for all the units coming in from the USA,and not only did I stay there that night but I slept in my old room.Hq Co. was in he fist building on the right as you came in the gate. Fortunately I was able to visit my old buddys at the 41st that night.I stayed with Bob Parker {my replacement Bn.mail clerk}and it was really great to see him. If anyone knows how to get in touch with him,Capt.Theodore Smith,Capt.Sidney C.Lundgren,or 1st Sgt Carlton T. Brown Please let me know. email---patdonusa1usa@netscape.net
CommentsWow,GREAT site! I was in A Btry 1-81 Arty Survey Section Nov70-Jun71. Was just settling in nicely when I got orders for Vietnam. I was in the room at Inneringen the night SSgt Parker beat up Sp/4 Flynn. Parker got busted to E-5 and assigned to D Btry. Yeah, I remember the Bloody Bucket, the EM club and the base theater that wouldn't allow blue jeans! I also had to go to another Bldg to use the showers. Strauss was the Alert Site. Any body remember Arnone's Alert? Survey Section was SSgt Dow, Sp/5 Coulter,Sp/4 then Sp/5 Swenson, Sp/4 Borr & me PFC then Sp/4 Stowe. Dan Duncan--I don't remember you but I'm sure we must have met. rkstowe@att.net

CommentsStowe--sorry I don't remember you. Were you assigned as a KP with Flynn @ Inneringen. I was a new guy and on the opposite shift on KP. We were across the hall the night of the Parker deal. E-5 Razar was with Parker and he got into some of it too as I remember. The only kp's I remember on that shift were Flynn and Love (another new guy). Before I left the site I had been moved to Battery Clerk with Stacy, Cain, and Brewer. Another new guy-Ed Carr-went into the survey section. Love became the armorer with Christopher and an E-5 whose name just escaped my mind. Never knew what happened to Parker--knew he went to Mannheim for a while right after the attack. Some of those names ring bells--Ludwig--did a lot of paperwork on him! I rember a Thompson who was the wrecker operator (?) and got married to another GI's daughter. Marco was in my original platoon and Duncan was in one of the firing sections. Can't put a finger on most of the rest of the names you mentioned in survey. Still in touch with BC, 1sg, and some of the others. Marco was a buddy; from Chicago area. Gene Smania
CommentsGene Smania--Yup, I was on the other KP shift. Do you remember the mess sergeant's names? There was a real tall E-6 and a short and wide E7 or E8 who seem pretty ornery at first but turned out to be OK. I have a picture of Ed (Curly) Carr. Thanks for all the pics you put on the 1/81 site. Neu Ulm was a great spot. You have an email address? rkstowe@att.net
CommentsStowe--the mess sgt was SFC Gaines H. Salvant--about the first or second day Medina came into our bay with him @ 7 AM or so and insisted we had to have the place up and running for inspection every morning. Salvant told him we were his KP's and we didn't need to be up and going at that time because we didn't have to report for duty until noon. Told him to come in about 930 and things would be strack. We were all still in bed, making off we were asleep but we heard it all. Medina didn't like it, but agreed to try it. He came back @ 930 on the dot and we had the place up and running--asked if we could help him and he said no. Never bothered us again. Salvant was a good guy--took care of his men and we went out of our way to please him. I did his retirement papers and he got the OK when we were @ Inneringen in Sep/Oct 71. Walked in to breakfast to find him--THE mess sgt, an E-7--taking orders and cooking omelets! When he got to me I said something about him being real happy and he told me his retirement had come thru, then he offered to cook me breakfast any way I wanted it. Great guy, lost touch with him once he left the unit. The other cook I remember from that stint on KP was sgt Brown--thought he was an E-5, but could be wrong. Tall, thin black guy who turned out to be OK too. It may have been KP, but it was a good job--warm, dry, time off, no hassles from any of the other guys. Us new guys didn't have any clearances yet so they couldn't assign us to pull point guard which was good because they hadn't given us any TA 50 and winter in Germany as we all know is not nice. Later on, back @ Wiley, I remember Salvant having 3 cooks (the whole section), all of whom got a social disease @ the same time and couldn't work with food. That made for some interesting dealing with the other batteries I imagine. Ed Carr got out just before I did--maybe March 72--on that RIF deal. If you could get an NG or Reserve unit back home to take you and you had 18 months in you could go home and serve the rest of the tour with them. If you were a US and had 19 months in you went home, period. Only way to stay was sign an intent to re-enlist or get a colonel or higher to sign some paperwork. Had one full bird on the whole base and he was community leader. I don't remember anybody saying no, I don't want to go home! For the e-mail try techoyr@yahoo.com

CommentsHi. I was stationed in Neu Ulm from 75 to 77. I was in A Btry, 1/81, basically 3rd platoon. I was a Pershing crewman, theodolite operator and wrecker operator. Two tours in Grafenwoer. Occupied Inneringen and began at Von Stuben warhead sites. Memorable names: SSG Crowe, SGT Noel, CPT Willie, B.C. CommentsCAME UPON THIS SITE BY ACCIDENT. WHAT LUCK! I WAS IN NEU-ULM FROM 76-78. HHB 1/81. THE C/O WAS CAPT. TOMMY WALLACE. THE BATTALION C/O I BELIEVE WAS LTC HUTCHINSON. WENT BACK WITH MY WIFE IN 96, BARRACKS WAS STILL THERE.WE NOTICED THAT EAST GERMAN REFUGEES WERE USING THE BARRACKS FOR HOUSING. I RETURNED A FEW YEARS LATER AND THEY WERE IN THE PROCESS OF TEARING THEM DOWN.VERY SAD.ANYBODY OUT THER FROM HHB. FEEL FREE TO CONTACT. BEST DAYS WE EVER HAD.I STILL TALK ABOUT DOWN TOWN. THE MUNSTER AND THE LITTLE HIDEAWAYS TO GET A BEIR. I HAVE VISITED MY LITTLE SISTER AT RAMSTEIN A.F.B IN KAISERLAUTERN AND THE BASE WAS HUGE WITH EVERYTHING ON IT, BUT IT STILL DOESN'T COMPARE TO THE DAYS AT WILEY. CommentsI am Pete Briley. HHB 2/5FA Go FISTERS! This is a great site. Brings back alot of memories. I still travel back to Ulm at least twice a year to visit my twin daughters that live there! The city has changed alot. I was stationed there from 1987-1991.
CommentsIt is sort of weird that when I was stationed there it was hell. But looking back those were my "Glory Days" ... I've never had friends again like those I left back in '88'. I guess everyone understands when I say those were the Best and Worst years, at the same time, of my life!
CommentsIt is weird, I remember we couldnt wait to " get back to the world", counted every day down inside of a year getting short etc. etc. I guess we all find some common ground between freezing your tail off in the mud and /or snow at Graf, and festing all summer long comes down to we were all in the same boat. I do miss the friends, and the ability to party all night and do PT in the a.m.!! SPC 4 HAmmitt- medic 4/5FA 84-Never been back, dont think I could do the first time around justice shammitt@prodigy.net if anybody remembers me.
CommentsI was at Nelson '71-'72 at the 579th Ord. Couldn't recognise a thing from the pictures. I can still remember Sgts Glore, Palmer, Roundtree, and some others. Wish I had taken some pictures of the place, but never thought. I was a guidance system repairman, which means I mostly drove a truck. Bob Endl

CommentsYour web site brings back many good memories of Wiley and Nelson barracks. I was a civilian working at AEG-Telefunken across town but went to church at the chapel on Wiley from 1970 to 1982. Made many friends at Wiley and Nelson. Was later working in Bonn as an Air Force contractor and had the opportunity to travel to Ulm/Neu-Ulm where the Bonn High School football team beat the Neu-Ulm High School team in 1988. I was the Bonn assistant football coach at the time! Great photos!
CommentsHi... just came on to your site.. Great Job!! I was with B-2/4Inf (Nelson Kaserne) from Oct '72 to Apr '74. Supporting 1/81FA and a tour to 1/41 when Inneringen was being updated. Was quite the airshow the day they moved all the Pershings and equipment out. The Yom Kipper War alert of Oct '73 was probably the scariest moment over there. I turned around to see all the Pershings erected... wondering what was going on as I had heard that the erecting was an 'act of war'. (?) Any other B-2/4 guys out there? Please drop me a note! Would like to catch up with you guys again someday! Thanks, Kevin Keefe sargemajor@hotmail.com Kevin Keefe
CommentsI was at Wiley, 1/81FA HSB from Dec. 82 thru Nov. 84. Got out early and yes that was a mistake; live and learn. I miss many great people there and think of them often. Cpt. Munnyhun, Sgt. Bunz, "Commodore" Steve and Silvia, Sgt. John "Not guard duty? Yes, guard duty." Yenter, SP5 "Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow" McKinnon, Sgt. Donnell, "ZAAAPP" Ybarra, "Dead Meat" Salusa, Sgt. Bennet, Mrs. "Minnie Mouse's T-shirt never looked so good!" Trent, Sgt. Rod, Cpt. Jed "I jes got to send you to CCF", "Crave-a-hole" Carvajal, PFC Linda Heydt from Allentown PA, Curtis Crudup, "Brick" Oliver, the Smaj iz trippin', Torres-Aponte, "platoon" Parham, and too many others to mention, but not forget. There were also many good things Deutchen to remember and miss: Gold Ochsen Hefe Weizen, schnitzles, currywurst, etc. Those were two of the best years of my life; I had plenty of good times and some not so good times there, like guard duty and CQ, etc. It seems like it was so long ago, but it was just yesterday... Regretfully, Ray A. yar_seliva@yahoo.com

CommentsI was stationed at Ford Barracks, Neu Ulm, 1963-65, HHC, 2nd Bn, 51st Inf. Col. W.W.West III was the Battalion Commander. I'll never forget the night we were called out on "Alert", after President Kennedy was assasinated. The German folks were burning the candles from their windows, as a sign of respect, as we drove our "pc's" down the streets enroute to our rendevous area. I remember climbing the many steps up the steeple Muenster(?), what a fantastic view from the top, I believe about 5 or 6 was able to stand around the steeple top. Yes, it was another time, another place. Thank you for the opportunity to wander back into another era.
CommentsWest Germany, '85to88', great place to be stationed if you were in the US Military.I was:). In B-1/81FA. I just want to say hello to all my Bro's who were in Neu-Ulm at the same time. CommentsHello-I'm a 15 year old teenager from the state of Wisconsin. I am an avid runner and was going through a bunch of books at my church. I came upon "The Complete Book of Running" and was excited to read it. When I began reading it I discovered that copyright was from 1977! As I flipped through the book I found two pieces of paper and clippings from a newspaper. The slips of paper were a form for Request and authority for leave. The name reads Russell F. Herrick. It reads that his Organization and station was Wiley Barracks Neu Ulm Germany Svc Btry, 1/81st FA APO NY 09035 Out of curiosity I hopped on-line and typed in "Wiley Bararcks" at Google. This site came up and I just couldn't resist the temptation to try and find out more about this person. I'm hoping that he'll reply.. chances are slim but I have hope. He asked to leave on 22 Feb 79. I'm sure none of you know Russell F. Herrick BUT If you can reply please do or know how I could find out anything about him it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

CommentsInfo on R.F. Herrick maybe found at Yahoo.com, under group's, PershingMissile is the name of the group. 1/81 FA was a Battion in the 56FA Brigade, Pershing1, P1a, and Pershing 2 Missile was it's unit mission. Or just key in Pershing 2 missile on google and these sites will come up. Lots of history, a unique military brigade. At that time he would of worked with the P1a system. Hope I shed a little lite on it.
